Scotsman James Braid was one of the greatest golf course designers in history. He respected nature and let the lie of land dictate the path for his fairways, tees and greens.
In 1922 Braid laid out a golf course on low lying heathland just a stones throw from the Suffolk coast in an area of outstanding natural beauty. His creation was Thorpeness Golf Club.
To this day, James Braid’s Thorpeness is regarded as one of the finest coastal heathland golf courses in Britain, and one of the best golf courses in Suffolk. Golfers play a course winding through heather, gorse, pine and silver birch trees, hit from firm quick drying soil with rare birdsong in their ears and the tang of sea salt in the air.
Thorpeness Golf Club is a private members golf club with a 36-bedroom hotel and is perfect for golf breaks and golf holidays.
Your hotel bedroom is less than a minutes’ walk from the first tee and our restaurant looks out over the golf course. The iconic ‘House in the Clouds,’ a converted water tower turned private home, hovers on the Suffolk skyline standing guard behind the 18th green.

Thorpeness Hotel
The hotel located on the edge of this unusual and quirky seaside village is only a few minutes from the beach and adjacent to the famous Thorpeness Meare. Built in the 1920 's as part of an Edwardian holiday village the hotel offers recently refurbished facilities incorporating 36 en-suite rooms, two bars and a restaurant, drawing room, library and snooker room. The atmosphere is in keeping with the traditonal and original concept but with modern facilities and 3 star standards. Some bedrooms overlook the well known and challenging 18 holes golf course, and several the Meare and gardens. The terrace is ideal for al fresco dining or a pre dinner drink during the warmer months. Menus feature fresh local produce either for full dining in the restaurant or for a lighter menu in the Patio Bar. Wines and beers are supplied by Adnams of Southwold who are well know for quality, including local Suffolk cider, Broadside Beer and award winning wines. The hotel offers excellent golf, and cycle hire all year round and in the Summer rowing boats. The fashionable seaside towns of Aldeburgh and Southwold are well worth a visit, or browse the home and gardens shops at Snape Maltings, home of the Aldeburgh Music Festival. Continue into Aldeburgh town centre, turn left at the seafront and Thorpeness is two miles along this road. You will find the hotel adjacent to the lake in Thorpeness village. Nearest airport is Norwich 40 miles North of Thorpeness, or Stanstead 70 miles away. Nearest port is Harwich on the East Coast 60 miles away.
