The Championship Course at 6,603 yards but with no par fives on the men's card is a substantial challenge for even the best golfer. The SSS off the Blue tees is 73 against a par of 68. Every hole presents an examination in shotmaking and accuracy; a stroke given away to the course is difficult to recover. It is also a beautiful place to play golf. The views of the River Alde and glimpses of the North Sea, grey one day blue another, are enough to raise the spirits even when the score is not quite up to expectation. The Ladies do have a number of par fives on their card and the appeal of the course is evident from the number of occasions on which the English Ladies have held their Championship at Aldeburgh. Mickey Walker, one of the most distinguished English lady golfers, regards Aldeburgh as one of her favourite courses, a great compliment from someone who has played all over the world.
The River Course has nine holes in a beautiful setting overlooking the River Alde. It has a par of 32 with an interesting mix of Par 3s and 4s with no bunkers but with the natural hazards of fine old pine trees, gorse and broom. The course is sufficiently challenging to intrigue the accomplished golfer with small greens, many of which are slightly crowned, whilst being suitable for the beginner or novice without a handicap. There are few restrictions on the River Course. No handicap certificate is required and four balls are welcome.
