One of Scotlands hidden gems Fort Augustus was laid out in 1924 by Harry Shapland Colt on the banks of the Caledonian Canal near Loch Ness.Although some changes have been made over the years the layout of the course remains basically as Harry Colt designed it. It is a nine hole course with mostly natural hazards. In a letter to the club in 1924 Colt says. "I do not want to see any artificiality about the course, except at the 7th hole (a very challenging par 3). The natural ridges and mounds will provide plenty of amusing shots, and your little course should be almost unique among golf courses in this way."Fort Augustus is a traditional heathland course and is widely regarded as the most challenging 9 hole course in Scotland. There are dual tee positions giving the course a true 18 hole feel.
