Built in the 19th century, the house was bought as a hunting lodge in 1888 by Lord Lonsdale, then one of the richest men in the country. Known as the Yellow Earl , he ensured that his name went down in history by bequeathing the famous Lonsdale Belt to boxing. His lodge was set in the incomparable landscape of the Lake District, over- looking one of England 's loveliest stretches of water - Windermere.
