Charnwood Forest Golf Club Opened in 1890, the James Braid heathland course was designed to make full use of the natural environment to create a course that challenged golfer to overcome the many incumbent hazards which included rocks, heather, gorse, bracken and stone walls. The course layout would have no bunkers & would make full use of the natural contours to ensure course management was imperative to achieve a low score. Since 1890 the course has undergone many changes, but there has been no diversion from the original vision which lives on today at Charnwood. The course has a deserved reputation for being both challenging and picturesque. The course is primarily heathland and is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) by Natural England because of its variety of habitat for flora and fauna. Perhaps the most unique feature of the course is that it is built amongst the Hanging Stone Rocks, dating back to some 620 million years. The rocks are a strong feature of the course and as well as being magnificent to look at, represent a hazard to overcome during a round! The course is measured at just less than 6000 yards for men and 5300 yards for ladies with a par of 69 and 71 respectively. The 18 hole layout is achieved over 9 fairways and greens but with 18 tees, many of which make the second 9 holes a very different challenge to the first.
