Since the ?_?_??60s, Hillside has hosted several major amateur events, including The Amateur Championship and the Ladies?_?_?? British Amateur, the course will again host The Amateur Championship in 2011. It has also staged the 1982 PGA Championship, won by Tony Jacklin, and, more recently, the 2003 English Seniors?_?_?? Open, won by Carl Mason.

Course
From the white tees the course at Hillside measures just over 7,000 yards meandering through majestic sandhills and tranquil pinewoods. From the blue tees the course is a more manageable 6,558 yards. Many of the holes have elevated tees with fantastic views over the Irish Sea. After playing the course, Greg Norman wrote to the Club saying that "The back nine were the best in Britain", while Jack Nicklaus described the course as "A wild looking links".
