Golf clubs

Heysham Golf Club in 1910, a joint tenure was made into golf when ̱The Morecambe and Heysham Golf Club̨ was formed at a meeting on the 23rd May 1892 at The Midland Hotel in Morecambe. The land was rented at a fee of ??43 per year and comprised part of Banks House Farm and the farm kitchen was used as the ̱Clubhousę. George Lowe, the professional at Lytham and St. Annes Golf Club, was the architect and the original 9 hole course was later extended to 12 holes. Annual subscription was one guinea per year with the promise that arrangements would be made for visitors to make use of the club room and course. Members were permitted to invite ladies to the course! Being a forward looking club, a meeting on the 13th July 1892 formed the Morecambe and Heysham Ladies̍ Golf Club with an annual subscription of ten shillings and six pence and a limit of forty members. Ladies played the same course as the men but with advanced tees on the longer holes. Despite the limitation of only 12 holes, two Exhibition Matches were played _ one in 1894 between Harry Vardon and Alex Herd and the other in 1897 between Harry Vardon and his brother Tom.
